Scabrezza 2016

The Wine

Scabrezza is made exclusively from Pinot Grigio grapes. A pleasant, tasty wine with delicate aromas. The label is a tribute to Dante with one of the verses he dedicated to Beatrice in the Divine Comedy. The name Scabrezza is a old term that was used to measure the flow of water in rivers and streams, such as water flow in ancient drainage channels, weirs and clapper bridges that still exist today on the property.

Historical Data

The Monteloro estate is located near Florence, just behind Fiesole, at the southern foot of the Apennine mountain range at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level.  The property extends over a total area of 600 hectares (1483 acres), 94 (232 acres) of which are planted to vines.  This area is unique for the cultivation of Riesling and Pinot Blanc and is known for its year round cool climate and rich mineral soils.   A Tuscan terroir that is ideal for producing aromatic white wines. At one time, Monteloro was home to aristocratic Florentine families, such as Beatrice Portinari and Dante Alighieri, who spent summers in the countryside taking up residence in their manor houses.  According to legend, the unique landscape of forests and narrow white trails inspired Dante in his travels in the Divine Comedy, honored by fantastic creatures possessing a triton’s body and dragon’s wings that twist together and form the letter “M”, initial of the Monteloro estate.  Scabrezza’s label illustrates one of the verses that Dante dedicated to Beatrice in the Divine Comedy.   The name Scabrezza comes from an ancient term used in hydrology to measure the streamflow of rivers and creeks, much like the ancient aqueducts, fishing weirs and stone bridges that are still visible today throughout the estate.

Scabrezza

The 2023 winter season was defined by mild temperatures and intense rain showers that guaranteed good groundwater reserves in the vineyards. The arrival of spring came late due to rainfall that persisted throughout the season, keeping temperatures cooler than seasonal averages. The summer months brought a significant rise in temperatures which, together with long sunny days that are typical of the month of June, ensured excellent flowering and fruit set. These conditions accompanied the growth cycle until the beginning of veraison. Scattered rain showers in August allowed Pinot Grigio berries to complete the ripening phase achieving the distinctive copper-color of the skins, while preserving good acidity, sapidity and an excellent aromatic profile. The grape harvest began at the very end of August and was completed mid-September.

Pinot Grigio grapes were harvested in the early morning hours, immediately brought to the cellar, destemmed, and gently pressed to extract the grape variety’s characteristic copper color. The must was then transferred into stainless steel vats and chilled to a temperature of 10 °C (50 °F) to favor natural clarification. After 48 hours, the wine was transferred into other tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place at a temperature that did not exceed 16 °C (61 °F). The wine aged in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 10 °C (50 °F) up until bottling.

Scabrezza 2023 is a straw yellow color with coppery highlights. The nose is intense with notes of pink grapefruits, pineapples and bananas that accompany delicate aromas of pears. The palate is fresh, well-balanced, savory and is defined by a pleasantly fruity aftertaste.

At one time, Monteloro was home to aristocratic Florentine families, such as Beatrice Portinari and Dante Alighieri, who spent summers in the countryside vacationing in their country manor homes. According to legend, this unique countryside of forests and narrow white country trails was the inspiration for Dante in his travels in the Divine Comedy. Fantastic mythological creatures possessing a triton’s body and dragon’s wings seem to pay their respects to the territory’s legacy and form the letter “M”, logo of the Monteloro estate.
