In the heart of Etruscan Maremma

The Fattoria Aldobrandesca estate is located in the southern part of Tuscan Maremma, in the center of what is known as “the Etruscan Tuff zone”. Maremma is often associated with its coastline, flat lands, pine tree forests, horses and local cowboys called “butteri”. The Fattoria Aldobrandesca estate is in rural Maremma located inland in an area known as the Tuff Area. Ancient civilizations built fascinating medieval fortresses and settlements on steep tuff bluffs that today are open-air museums, as Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovana are.

The History

The History

First Etruscan then Roman, the small town of Sovana was conquered by the Lombards who assigned it to the powerful Aldobrandeschi family, lending their name to the estate. Around the year 1000 A.D., Hildebrand of Sovana, who later became Pope Gregory VII, favored his native town with privileges from the papal state expanding Sovana’s settlements. Sovana became the capital of a wealthy and powerful county. Sovana and the surrounding settlements on tuffaceous rock fell under the control of Siena then Florence finally becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Fattoria Aldobrandesca is in the center of this rich historical landscape also of great viticultural importance.

The vineyards

The estate’s 250 hectares (618 acres) of vineyards are on the slopes of a spur of tuffaceous rock where the hilltop town of Sovana is located, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape of remarkable archeological importance. Flat terrain of volcanic origin with tuffaceous subsoils are at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level (656 feet). Aleatico, a very old and traditional grape variety, and Malbèc, a new variety for the Italian wine producing sector, have found an ideal terroir.

Research and Development

Research and Development

Fattoria Aldobrandesca represents an important challenge for Marchese Antinori, to rediscover an ancient varietal such as Aleatico and to develop a newer varietal, Malbèc, a grape that has found in this area the ideal terroir to express its potential.
