Overview
Overview

The 100-hectare Pèppoli estate is situated 5km north-east of Tignanello. 62 hectares are planted with vineyards, from which we make the Pèppoli Chianti Classico DOCG.

The vineyards are east/north-east facing but despite this unusual aspect they are within an ideal microclimate in a small valley which holds the heat particularly well. The soil is stony and rich in minerals, perfect for growing fruity, lively Sangiovese.

There are also 27 hectares of olive groves, with 5,500 olive trees, some of which are centuries old.

History
History

Antinori purchased the estate in 1985, the year that marked the 600th anniversary of the family's winemaking business. The first vintage of Pèppoli Chianti Classico - the 1985 - was presented in 1988. The estate's history goes back a long way: from the Middle Ages, the vineyards were cared for by the Vallombrosani monks who made wine at the Pèppoli monastery, under the jurisdiction of the nearby Badia a Passignano.

The monastery was partly destroyed and later abandoned in 1379 when the Guelphs were defeated by the Ghibellines. The Bonsignori built a villa on the ruins, which was later owned by other Florentine aristocrats: first the Gondi and then the Cerchi who built a small elegant chapel here in he 16th century, dedicated to their ancestor Santa Umiliana. Later Pèppoli passed into the hands of the Ridolfi and then the Saccardi, who sold the property to the Antinori.
