Scalabrone

Vintage

Classification

Bolgheri Rosato DOC

Blend

40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 30% Syrah

Climate

Temperatures were mild during the autumn and winter, and frequent rainfall saturated the terrain and left a certain coolness in the soil. Bud burst took place, normally, in early April, and the subsequent phases of the season – plant growth and flowering – developed positively thanks to the regular temperatures o May, and June and low levels of rainfall. Summer was particularly mild and July featured abundant precipitations. Harvesting began two weeks later than usual and particularly rigorous selection of the grapes to be utilized was essential.

Vinification

Each individual grape variety, cultivated in vineyards selected and cultivated for the production of Scalabrone, was fermented separately. The harvested grapes, once in the cellar, were destemmed and given a soft pressing. The juice macerated on its skins at low temperatures for a period of three to five hours on the basis of the characteristics of the individual variety in order to obtain a must without astringent notes. The must, after pressing, went into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks where it fermented at temperatures held to a maximum of 61° Fahrenheit (16° centigrade). The single lots were carefully and systematically evaluated a month after the conclusion of the fermentation and then selected for the composition of the final blend.

Historical data

The Guado al Tasso estate is located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southwest of Florence near Bolgheri, a medieval hamlet in the upper Maremma area of the Tuscan coast. The estate extends for some 2500 acres (1000 hectares) from the Tyrrhenian sea to the inland hills and includes, in addition to 750 acres (300 hectares) of vineyards, olive groves and fields of wheat, corn, and sunflowers. The wine takes its name from Scalabrone, a bandit who lived in the area in the early 19th century, a sort of local Robin Hood who attacked ships in the port and canal of Bolgheri.

Tasting notes

A brilliant, light, peony pink in color, the wine shows rich and intense aromas of fruit (cherries and raspberries) an flowers. The palate is fresh and balanced with a long and fruity aftertaste.
