Scalabrone

Vintage

Classification

Bolgheri Rosato DOC

Blend

40% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot 20% Sangiovese

Climate

The beginning of spring saw a good amount of rain and slighty higher temperatures than the seasonal average, which favored a slight anticipation of the budding phase.
In the following period, average temperatures and rainfall led to excellent flowering and vegetative cycle.
Rains at the beginning of summer maintained a good plant growth equilibrium which lasted throughout the month of August. Notwithstanding the high day temperatures, nights were cool and assured the full ripening of all grape varieties. As a result, the ripening of the grapes proceeded optimally, guaranteeing the presumption of an excellent harvest.

Vinification

The grapes used for this wine are grown in the vineyard known as 'Scalabrone' which is situated on the estate of '#Tenuta Guado al Tasso#' in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. After picking, the maceration of the Sangiovese grapes lasted about 12 hours, while the maceration of the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes lasted for 24 hours at controlled temperature (less than 10°C). This produced a must rich in colour but without any trace of astringency. After decantation at a low temperature (10°C), the must was racked and alcoholic fermentation took place at about 18°C. After this, the wine was transferred into stainless steel tanks (taking care to avoid contact with air), until bottling.
Alcohol : 11,5% Vol.

Historical data

#Tenuta Guado al Tasso# is located 60 miles southwest of Florence, near the medieval village of Bolgheri, in an area known as the Maremma. The 900 hectares (2,223 acres) estate stretched up from the shore of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the hills, and boasts vineyards, wheat, corn, sunflowers, tomatoes and olive trees.
The vineyard (and subsequent wine) was named after a bandit named 'Scalabrone' who was native to this area in the early 1800s. The wine, while classified as a rosé, is quite unique with a particularly intense colour and bouquet. Due to its limited production, at present it is only available on a few specific markets.

Tasting notes

Intense 'red rosé' in colour and full of fruity, strawberry aromas. On the palate, well balanced with a good structure.(Ideal as an alternative to red wine in the summer).
